Should we follow the Gregorian calendar or the Lords? What about The Lunar Calendar?

Updated: Oct 11, 2023

I think we should observe the Lords Calendar over man's. Yes I know we cant completely remove mans calendar from our lives, but we can give the Lords Calendar the honor and observation it deserves. I believe in what scripture says not in what man says.
We should let go of the Holi days and cling to the Holy Days.

What are the differences?

Gregorian Calendar

"The Gregorian calendar is a solar dating system used by most of the world. It is named for Pope Gregory XIII, who issued the papal bull Inter gravissimas in 1582, announcing calendar reforms for all of Catholic Christendom."
This is a man made solar calendar provided by the Catholic Church by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Selecting Sunday as the day of rest.
This Calendar also has it's own Holi days, and doesn't recognize the Lord's Holy Days. I do not need to gab about the Gregorian canlendar as we are all very familar with it and the holi days it observes.

Lord's Calendar Lunar-Solar

The Lords Calendar can be seen by anyone at any time if we know what to look for.
It is the Moon, Sun, and Stars.

If you were deserted on an island without any technology, calendars, or way to keep time how would you?
You would use all these things. This was once known to all men, until we got lazy and let others tell us what time it is, what day it is, and what month it is.

If we needed to know the day or the month, don't you think the Lord provided for us? Yes he did.
The Lord created a perfect world. The lights in the sky do what they were designed for as described in scriptures.
Genesis 1:14-19 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And god set them in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

H8141 sana-year:--year, as division of time, as measure of time, as indication of age, a lifetime

The New moon marks the beginning of the Month.
The weekly sabbaths are counted by the cycles of the sun (a day) in a consecutive and perpetual count.
Should you be stranded somewhere with no one or no other way of telling what day count it is, we would have come from some place where we knew the day count already. We would just keep the count going.
If we were in a remote jungle and never knew the correct day count, the Lord would provide for us someone that would help. If we seek we will find, if we ask we will receive.
If you do your best until provided for I believe the Lord takes this into account.

How do we familiarize ourselves with the Lords Calendar?
We read scriptures, granted not everything is in the Bible.

This will be a difficult concept for most of us because we are so used to the Gregorian solar calendar.
This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

How do we determine what New Moon indicates the first month of the year. This is not specifically stated in scriptures.

I've had to come to some understanding on my own.
Like which New Moon is the 1st of the year.
I got confused in the beginning as to know when the "spring" new moon was. After careful research found that it is marked by another phenominon called the Spring Equinox. The first full moon following the equinox is the marker of the 1st month of the year.

Equinox and Solstice.
An Equinox is the day that light and night are equally divided. The same number of hours of daylight to night time.

A solstice is the longest amount of daylight or shortest amount of daylight of the year in your region. This falls in June and December in every region. The Northern region will have Summer Solstice on June 21th and Winter Solstice on December 21st.

The Sun travels between 2 tropics each year in a cycle. The Tropic of Cancer (23.4 degrees N latitude) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.4 degrees S latitude).
The sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer in a spiral motion out to the tropic of Capricorn and then back again every year.

The Frist New Moon following the Spring Equinox is the First Month of the year. This year the equinox is on March 20 and the next New Moon is on March 21st. So March 21st the first day of the Lord's year. This is when we begin our observation of the Holy Days of the Lord for this new year. How do I know, keep reading.

Months
This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. These two verses tells us that first month of the year is the same time we Observe Passover and Unleavened Bread
This day came ye out in the month Abib.
Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:)
Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night. This verses tells us the Month of the year is Abib. (Aviv or Nisan)

Exodus 12 and Leviticus 23 gives the times appointed to observe the days of the Lord.

Now we have to determine which New Moon marks the first month of the year.
Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night. This verse tells us it was during the time the Israelites were released from Egypt.
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats
And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover
And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children.
And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle.
That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males shall be the LORD'S.
And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.
These verses sum up that it must have been during the spring time as men, women, and children walked to the Red Sea. That new life was born in the flocks and herds. Moses was tending the herd when called by God. All these things are not done in the winter so we know it's not that time of the year. It had to be warm enough for the Lord to call all his people on a long hike, and with new life being born in the herds, this usually happens in the spring time.
PLUS we have the Equinox's and Solstices to help with determining the time of year.

We can also look at the Jewish calendar to see when they have Abib listed in it. It matches Spring time. New life indicates the New year.

ניסן — Nisan — (30 days)
אייר — Iyyar — (29 days)
סיון — Sivan — (30 days)
תמוז — Tammuz — (29 days)
אב — Av — (30 days)
אלול — Elul — (29 days)
תשרי — Tishri — (30 days)
חשון — Cheshvan — (29 or 30 days)
כסלו — Kislev — (30 or 29 days)
טבת — Tevet — (29 days)
שבט — Sh'vat — (30 days)
אדר — Adar — (29 days)

Now I don't keep the Sabbath days or Holy Days by the Jewish schedule. I follow what scriptures says because even that sect of people has allowed mans traditions to overrule the Law and instruction of God.

Example: A day, for Jewish culture, begins in the evening. So if a baby is born at 6pm their birthday will be following date according to the rest of the known world.
They also celebrate new years in September, not in the Spring.

The Lord says A day is:
And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
And the evening and the morning were the third day.
The Lord worked all day and proclaimed that the daylight of worked hours, that evening, and the morning was a FULL DAY.
H1242 Boqer-Morning--Morning, break of day, end of night, of coming of daylight, of coming of sunrise
So our creator says the start of a day is when the sun breaks the horizon.

Leviticus 23 there are two days we are instructed to do things in the evening. The evening of Passover, and the evening before the day selected to start observing the Day of Atonement. If the Lord did not intend for the day to begin with the rise of the Sun then why give this stipulation?

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
And another scripture to back up the day begins with the crest of the sun over the horizon.

I do not know why the Jewish people chose to follow man's tradition over the Fathers, but this is one of the main reason's I will not follow their schedule for the Holy Days.

Holy Days: How do we know when the Holy days are?

And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

We read Leviticus 23 to know what month and day of the month each Holy day is on.
7 Holy Days per year in the annual memorial.
Passover, no a Holy day
Unleavened Bread, 2 Holy days
Pentecost
Blowing of Trumpets
Day of Atonment
Feast of Taberbacles, 2 Holy Days

In addition there are also weekly Sabbath days/Holy days and New Moon Sabbath days/Holy Days.

Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons.

Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

New Moon
Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day.
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.
These two verses tells us the First day of the Month is a New Moon.

So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.
And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.
And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.
And in the day of the new moon it shall be a young bullock without blemish, and six lambs, and a ram: they shall be without blemish.
Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

How do we know which day is the 7th day:

This is not an accurate lunar calendar, just an example.
LUNAR Calendar

Some speculate that we are to keep the weekly sabbath days according to the lunar cycles as described in the below videos and PDF

Lunar Sabbath Videos

I've been sold on the new moon to start the months of the year for a couple of years now.
I have been observing Saturday as the 7th day sabbath for a couple of years now, even though I am not SDA. I have heard some testimonies that say this is not the correct way to observe the weekly sabbath. That we should use the moon as a monthly reset for the weekly count. Some say to use each milestone moon cycle having extra days in between the weeks, and others say that the count begins again each new moon leaving days at the end of the month unaccounted for.
The links above are testimonies in particular I listened to. There isn't scripture to back up the claim.

I only want to please the Lord and live my life the way he wants me to according to scriptures alone.
What doesn't make sense to me is the Lord tells us to observe the 7th day sabbath by counting 6 working days and rest on the 7th. Thers in no mention of the count to begin on a new moon or restart each new moon. Gen 1, Exodus 16 & 20, Leviticus 23

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The passage that was used to try and tell me it is in the Bible is Ezekiel 46:1-6
Eze 46:1 Thus saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.
Eze 46:2 And the prince shall enter by the way of the porch of that gate without, and shall stand by the post of the gate, and the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be shut until the evening.
Eze 46:3 Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons.
Eze 46:4 And the burnt offering that the prince shall offer unto the LORD in the sabbath day shall be six lambs without blemish, and a ram without blemish.
Eze 46:5 And the meat offering shall be an ephah for a ram, and the meat offering for the lambs as he shall be able to give, and an hin of oil to an ephah.
Eze 46:6 And in the day of the new moon it shall be a young bullock without blemish, and six lambs, and a ram: they shall be without blemish.

In reading these passages I do not see where there is a command that the weekly sabbath is to start on a new moon. No where does it say that each month restarts the weekly count cycle. Nor does it say on months that are longer than 28 days to disregard the extra days and restart on the next new moon with the weekly count.

It says that both a weekly sabbath AND a new moon day are holy days.

We must let the Bible define itself. All scriptures that tells us how to honor and observe the 7th day Sabbath and to count the days.

In Exodus 16 the Lord reset this perpetual count over a period of 40 years while the Israelites were in the wilderness by placing bread and quail on the ground called manna that fell from the sky. They were to collect it daily just enough for their household for that day. On the 6th day they were to collect twice as much so that they would be fed on the 7th day sabbath as none fell that day. They were to rest that day.
This examply in scriptures shows us that the 7 day week is a steady ongoing count and does not base it's start and stop on the moon cycles, as no moon cycle was mentioned anywhere in this passage. This example covered a period of 40 years, thats 2080 week cycles perpetually kept.
The same with Gen 1, Exodus 20, or Leviticus 23 when talking about the 7th day sabbath no mention of using the moon when calculating these days.

While Christ was on earth he did not dispute the 7 day count the Jewish people kept so it must have stayed intact from Exodus to Christ.

I'm cool with the month cycle beginning with the new moon, it was an adjustment coming from the solar calender. I still mess up somethings. The Lord also says a day begins with the sun breaking the horizon. confirmed below.
In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

He says to count the days for the weekly sabbath. To count the days from the new moon to the annual sabbaths, and that the day of the new moon is also a sabbath, a day of animal sacrifice.
Eze 46:6 And in the day of the new moon it shall be a young bullock without blemish, and six lambs, and a ram: they shall be without blemish.

So using info from the aforementioned video. My understanding she is giving is the New Moon, Quarter Moons, and Full Moon are the weekly sabbath days. The New Moon marking the beginning of each month. My confusions comes in to the fact that in some months there is extra days between milestone moon phases. Meaning some "weeks" have 8 or 10 days between the quarter cycle, And we are not using the Lords definition of a day to help determine the 6 working days and the 7th day sabbath. In this scenario we are using only the Moon.

Example: This March 21st 2023 is a new moon. This marks the Lords New year's Day.

We are to count 14 days and observe the Lord's Passover that evening. This would be on the Gregorian Calendar April 3rd.
We are to count 15 days and observe the 1st day of Unleavened Bread as a Holy day. April 4th
We are to count 7 days from the 15th of the month to the 22nd and observe the 7th day which would be the 22nd as a Holy day April 10th

If we used the cycles of the moon instead of counting as instructed it would be April 6th for Passover quarter full moon, day April 7th and April 13th quarter moon
Can you see how there are more days between March 21st and April 6th than we are commanded to count for Passover?
Can you see there are less days between April 7 to April 13 than we are command to count for the 1st and 7th day of Unleavened Bread?

Using the other Method described in the PDF of a new moon restarts the consecutive count doesn't pan out either.

Example:
July to August
New Moon July 17
New Moon August 16
There are 31 days from new moon to new moon
This means when we reach the 28th day there are 2 left over days until the next new Moon.
There is no scripture to tell us what to do with these days as they do not fall within the 7 day weekly cycle.

The moon cycles every 28-30 days, so some months the moon cycle will have extra days in it. According to science the moons average monthly cycle is every 29.53 days. That gives an average number of days in a 4 week period of 7.38 days.

These folks are adding to the Word of God, taking passages out of context, and implying things that are inaccurate. Using the statement the new moon marks the beginning of a month to mean that is also starts a weekly 7th day sabbath count. Even though no scripture gives that instruction. All because someone put the notion in their minds.
Much like other Protestant followers do with other false doctrines.
The 7th day sabbath was established prior to the annual holy days and the new moon holy days. Gen 2. Why would we now use the moon to determine when those days are?

They are taking non biblical text as a definition of what the Bible is saying which is wrong. The Bible can only be defined by itself for it to be true. Anything else is false doctrine and following false doctrines can lead you away from salvation.

What the Lord Says to DO

I do believe that we should keep the Lord's Sabbath days as He has instructed. I have found a scripture that says the Moon is to determine the appointed times of the Lord. That the new moon marks the beginning of a month. And others that say we should use the new moon to count the days as commanded to the annual Holy day. That a new moon day is a Holy day, and that we should keep a weekly 7th day sabbath.

The new moon observance was not placed in the 613 commandments of the Father. The annual and weekly Holy Sabbath days were. These are the days I observe my command of the Father.

He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down
H4150 moed-seasons--appointed place, appointed time, appointed sign or signal, sacred season, set feast, appointed season
And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
Thus saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.

So scriptures says the Moon is appointed to tell us the Holy days. There is NO mention of the cycles of the moon to be the weekly Sabbath day's, just that the New Moon is the beginning of the month, and the day of the new moon was used for animal sacrifice.
And in the day of the new moon it shall be a young bullock without blemish, and six lambs, and a ram: they shall be without blemish.
We can observe the new moon as a Holy Day in memorial of what was once done on this day, but it is not listed in the 613 commandments to do so.
Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the sabbaths and in the new moons

Scriptures tells us to count the days from the New Moon forward for Annual days of observance, and told us what a day is. Scripture tells us to count a week in 7 days time working 6 days and resting on the 7th. The 7th day sabbath, although it is listed in the passage with the Annual feasts, it doesn't indicate to keep it according to the moon cycles. It is also talked about in Gen 1, Exodus 16 & 20.

Below are snippets from Leviticus 23 on the Lord's instruction to keep his Holy Days.
We know from the prior verses above that the first Annual Feast day is to be in the 1st month of the year on the 14th day of the year called Passover. We are told to count 14 days, not to look for a sign from the moon to indicate which day this is.

Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD'S passover.
And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread
In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete: (weekly sabbaths)
Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.
Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.
On the first day shall be an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein.

The 7th day sabbath was established prior to the annual feasts days in Genesis. Work 6 days and rest on the 7th by the example of the Father. A continual and perpetual schedule not dependent on the moon cycles as there had not been any moon cycles on the 6th day of creation or 7th day of rest by that time, nor a written indicator saying to follow moon cycles for this day count.
If the Lord had intended on us to leave out a couple days in the months of the moon cycle that are greater than 28 days he would have said. The 7th Day Sabbath cycle is independent from the moon cycles of a month.

I believe that IF the Lord intended on us to keep the 7th day sabbath according the inconsistent timing of the cycles of moon he would have clearly indicated that to us, and there is no scripture to support that thought or theory. I believe that we should keep the feast days of the Lord as commanded, and the 7th day sabbath as commanded by counting the days. The Annual feast days with the 1st of the month marked by the new moon, and the weekly sabbath by the perpetual counting of the 7 day cycle regardless of what day the new moon falls on.

How do we tell which day is the 7th day Sabbath? see the next article...

The Lord is serious about his time, I don't want to be the one to disappoint him.
Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Which Calendar will you keep?

  • Lunar-Solar, God's Calendar and instruction

  • Luanr only Calendar disregarding the count of days.

  • Gregorian Calendar, celebrating Secular Holidays
